Here’s The Gist!
January 10, 2023
The Gist is a new proactive sports media brand run by women and non-binary people. They give a twice weekly update with women’s perspectives on male and female sports, and it’s free – who doesn’t love that! The sports articles, which they call “fun and fresh,” are kept light which makes it easy to read the sports news. This also lets the audience get “the gist” of what’s happening in recent sports. Along with this, they also have a podcast and social media platforms to reach all audiences.
The Gist started with three college friends who noticed the lack of women’s representation in sports news. These three friends, Ellen Hyslop, Roslyn McLarty, and Jacie deHoop, are originally from Canada. Ever since they first released the site in 2019, the women have expanded their news site and have close to 700k subscribers; they even got recognition from Forbes. These women have brought a new future to sports news.
The Gist was inspired to bring more diversity into the male-dominated industry of sports because of their frustration with lacking coverage of women’s sports. Not only this, but there is also a lack of women reporters covering sports. These women had a new vision for sports media and are succeeding to bring their ideas to life.
It is no secret that there are more men than women in the sports industry. Over the past 41 years, only 20.9% of sports news reporters have been women while 79.1% have been men. According to the Gist, less than 4% of the sport coverage is on female sports.
Similar to The Gist, The Print is mainly women with only 1 male staff reporter. The Print is very glad we are able to have female representation. The Print is always here for a “fun and fresh” perspective on news.
