Anyone who keeps up with current events may have noticed a lot of their favorite celebrities in New York this past week. Prompted by fashion week, designers from around the world brought their work to the city to showcase new collections for the spring-summer 2024 season. These events were star-studded, including pretty much every influencer and micro-celebrity under the sun, as well as many A-listers. Here’s 5 of the most eye-catching moments from New York Fashion Week.
Rihanna released a new collection of footwear as a Fenty x Puma collaboration. Back in 2015, the brands released an initial collaboration of only sneakers, whereas this time around, they relaunched some original styles, added faux-fur slides, new sneaker designs, and completely new apparel; never done before by these designers. Rihanna looked back into Puma archives and gathered some inspiration for her personal collection. Throughout fashion week, Fenty x Puma had multiple showrooms and a runway show to unveil the collection. Attendees included Chris Rock, Naomi Campbell, Anna Wintour, Jeremy Scott, and many other A-listers.
Animal rights activists crashed Coach’s runway show, protesting the use of leather in their newest collection. Two PETA protesters, one adorning red and black body paint to match the collection, jumped onto the runway mid-show to frown upon the use of cow leather in the bags and accessories produced by Coach. The protestors got into the venue wearing black trench coats and arrived with two other activists. Half of the group of PETA protestors stood mid-show to remove the coats and reveal body paint that represents a skinned animal, as well as signs that said “Coach: Leather kills.” The two protestors walking the runway were picked up and carried out of the show by security, while the others were simply ushered out.
Naomi Campbell walked the runway and makes her debut as a designer after releasing a collection with British brand, PrettyLittleThing. The collection included everything from evening gowns to statement boots. Campbell collaborated with Victor Anate and Edvin Thompson, two young designers that gave her insight and advice to make the collection happen. Campbell strutted the runway in a high neck mesh floor-length gown designed by her. Campbell’s connections allowed the show to be filled to the brim with stars that came to support her newest venture.
Ralph Lauren returned to NYFW for the first time since the pandemic. If you know anything about Ralph Lauren, you know that they have a very classic, all-American feel to their brand. Their collections frequently feature polos, sweaters, western jeans, and the American flag featured on many pieces. This time around, acid-wash jeans, fringe, and metallic gowns were the stars of the show. The show was filled with celebrities ready to celebrate Ralph’s return to his hometown.
Breakfast at Tiffany’s is back! The widely known jewelry brand, Tiffany’s, released a collection with haute couture brand, Givenchy. The partnership was previewed at New York Fashion Week as a part of their Blue Book for 2023, a book released every year to highlight their pieces. Showcasing a modern-day version of the 1961 film and what many consider to be one of the most iconic fashion moments in history. Models strutted the runway decked with diamonds, thick black sunglasses, and beehive updos: all staples of Audrey Hepburn’s character, Holly Golightly.
A common theme throughout this fashion week seems to be brands going back to their roots. Whether it’s bringing back archival pieces, modernizing classic styles, or even bringing in industry staples to weigh in on collections, designers aim to evoke a sense of comfort and nostalgia. Fashion month is sure to be one for the books this year.
