The Cougar Field Hockey Team won the regional championship for the last two years, but on October 31, 2023, they added another, beating Patterson Mill 4-2 for their third consecutive regional championship title.
The Cougars started with a bang. Only 2 minutes into the game, Senior Camryn Barrett scored a goal with an assist from Junior Lily Burns. The Cougars kept the ball on their end of the field for the rest of the quarter.
Going into the second quarter, the Cougars played a tough defense, letting in no goals. Fallston continued their lead with Senior Erin-Kate Roeder scoring the Cougars’ second goal with another assist from Junior Lily Burns.
After half time, the Cougars came back better than ever, getting 3 corners in the 3rd quarter. Then, Lily Burns scored the 3rd goal of the game off the goalie’s pads. Just a minute later, Senior Sara Drzik scored another goal assisted by Burns. But then, with 5 minutes left in the 3rd quarter, the Huskies scored their first goal off of a corner.
Fallston went into the 4th quarter playing a strong offense, up 4-1. They kept the ball on their side for the first half of the quarter, adding to their more than 30 shots on goal during the game. In a switch of momentum, the Huskies took the ball down the field and got a corner, which led to their second goal of the game, taking the score to 4-2.
But in true Cougar fashion, the Cougar defense, led by Senior Captains Riley Cloude and Hailey Meyer, stepped it up. Although the Huskies did have a couple shots, Senior Goalie Kyleigh O’Mailey let none of them in. Then off a clear, Senior Erin-Kate Roeder carried the ball up the field where it stayed for the rest of the game, securing the win for the Cougars.
The Cougars all ran on the field to celebrate the win with Senior Goalie Kyleigh O’Mailey. They were very excited to say the least. Senior Captain Hailey Meyer says, “[Winning] it was really awesome because we’ve been working really hard all season for it.”
Coach Cummings was extremely proud of the team saying, “We had a lot of opportunities and were able to get the rebounds and put the ball in the back of the net! Each game we are able to learn and grow from it and I am looking forward to another day of practice together!”
