As we start the new school year, we would like to take a moment to reflect on our awesome summer. From new cats and dogs, to vacationing all over Europe, going down to the beach, relaxing at home, and not to mention those taking on part-time summer jobs, FHS students had a busy summer.
New Pets!
Summertime is the perfect time to add a new addition to the family, including furry friends. Auggie McCarthy spent her summer bonding with her new puppy, Thor, a French bulldog who is only a few months old. While puppies may look very adorable, “having a puppy is very hard though, I used to have to wake up at 5 am every day and take care of him… it’s like having a baby,” Auggie says. Aside from his cute face, “he loves walks, and he loves running, it’s his favorite thing.”
While dogs make a very cute pet, so do cats! Careina and Elleigh Rowe’s cat, Stella, just gave birth at the end of July to a litter of kittens. “The kittens are named Elvis, Daisy and Honey,” Careina says. The litter’s father is a cat named Scott who lives around the neighborhood and only has one eye. Careina plans to give Daisy and Honey away to friends in a few weeks, but “Elvis,” she says, “…we might keep him.”
European Vacations
Harry Plaisted went on a two-week long trip to England, where some of his favorite places he explored included Soho, London, The Lake District, and Camden Market. While visiting the lake districts, Harry and his family went on a 3-day backpacking trip where they hiked around 9 miles each day on elevated lands. Aside from hiking, Harry ate “a lot of beans and even tried jellied eel” which he described as “really disgusting.”
Over the summer, Adrian Lisiewiski, visited Rzeszow, Poland, the city where his mom is from. While on his trip, Adrian got to visit family members who still live in Poland and even attended the wedding of one of his cousins. Unlike Harry, Adrian says, “The food was amazing, honestly better than most food [he’s] eaten in [his] life.” Overall, Adrian had a great experience visiting his family’s country, as he claimed, “It was my first time there, and I honestly enjoyed it!”
Work
While school is out for summer, most teenagers like to fill the time by picking up a part-time job; it is a great way to learn new skills while making money. Over the summer, Tyson Book worked as a lifeguard at the Fallston Swim Club. “It’s really fun being with all my friends and working in a safe environment,” he says. While providing basic first aid and enforcing safety rules is important, Tyson says “working with people I know and meeting new people through lifeguarding” is the best part.
Matilda Blouin had a busy summer working at Bjucied, a juice bar located in Coppermine Bel Air Athletic Club. “I make fresh pressed juice, I make açai bowls, chop a lot of fruit, [and] make smoothies,” she says. “I know a lot now about protein powder and the benefits of juicing, so it’s been interesting.”
Even though everyone – including myself – will miss summer, we can’t wait to see what the new school year has to offer. Whether it’s joining a club, sport, or meeting new people, each day will have the potential to be just as good as summer break.
