Last Wednesday, Spanish club officers hosted their first meeting of the school year, taking place in Senora Connelly and Senora Williams’ classrooms. The officers of the club include Emma Nigro, Co-President; Leslie Cano-Garrido, Co-President; Helen Urdaneta, Vice president; Chloe Mauler, Historian; and Delaney Whittington, Secretary.
The meeting started off with a presentation hosted by Emma about Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead), which is a holiday celebrated primarily in Mexico and Central America on November 1-2. She explained the traditions that follow this holiday which include creating ofrendas, which are “offerings” that are set up during this time to honor a loved one who has passed. The ofrendas include photographs, flowers, candles, food, etc.
Following the presentation, there were two different activities set up for the members: sugar skull decorating and loteria (bingo). The sugar skulls were made of jumbo marshmallows that each student got to decorate as a sugar skull, which is the symbol of the holiday, using edible markers. The members had total creative freedom to make the skulls as colorful as possible.
During Loteria, the members were given bingo cards featuring multiple images that correspond to a Spanish word. Sienna Smith and Jupiter Moore read out the number on the top of the cards in Spanish, while members marked their boards using beans in hopes to get loto.
It is never too late to be a part of this wonderful club! Club officers are looking forward to having “a holiday fiesta featuring holiday customs from different Spanish speaking countries,” says Mauler. If you are interested, you can join the Remind for the upcoming meetings by texting @8b3bdk to 81010 and be on the lookout for the next celebration. You do not have to take a Spanish class to be a member in the club; however, it is necessary to RSVP as soon as possible to attend the meetings by completing the Microsoft Forms that are linked in the Remind.
