The Jake Paul vs Mike Tyson fight took place Last Friday, November 15th. Taking place at the Dallas Cowboys’ AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas, the Netflix-hosted event featured three undercard matches before the main clash between Paul and Tyson.
Prior to the fight, Cleavland’s Jake Paul held a record of 11-1 with seven knockouts throughout his career, his only loss coming to British professional boxer, Tommy Fury, who won by a split decision. Weighing in at 227 lbs., the 27-year-old held quite the age disparity coming into the fight.
His matchup? One of the greatest fighters of all time, New York City’s Mike Tyson. The now 58-year-old is as highly regarded as you can be in all of fighting, but to say he’s past his prime would be an understatement. Holding a record of 50-6 with 44 knockouts, the 220-pounder has fought in over 150 more rounds than Paul has.
The match went the distance of the unorthodox eight two-minute rounds. Paul managed to clinch the victory by a unanimous vote after outlasting Tyson’s stamina and landing numerous impactful jabs. The judges of the match gave scores of 80;72 and 79;73 in favor of Paul. But why was this match so huge?
I interviewed some Fallston students to get to the bottom of why everyone was so interested in this fight. First, I interviewed Junior Joseph Mullen. Joseph watched the fight primarily hoping to see “Jake Paul get knocked out by Mike Tyson.”
Joseph felt Paul was “kind of an annoying and entitled person, so [he] was really hoping Mike would do some damage.” He also wanted to see a great fight and was disappointed by the “boring” outcome, especially after all the hype leading up to the match.
Flynn Callan, another student at Fallston, also said he made big plans for watching the match. “I hung out with three other friends, and we all chilled in one of our basements,” Flynn shared. “Mike has been sort of like a hero to me, so I really wanted to see him win.”
Though it wasn’t the outcome Flynn was looking for he said that “[he] still had so much fun watching with [his] friends, and it’s not every day you get to see your childhood hero box a guy [he] used to watch on Disney channel.”
Needless to say, it’s not every day you get to watch a 27-year-old Youtuber fight a 58-year-old heavy weight champion, so if you missed the live stream, I’d definitely recommend watching this odd matchup!
