Last Tuesday, November 19th, the Science National Honors Society hosted their annual Ice-cream social to kick off the collection of pet supplies, which will be donated to The Humane Society of Harford County. Members were then able to make their own ice cream with toppings and enjoy it with friends.
The event took place in Science NHS advisor Mrs. Cummings’ room for an introduction to what donations are needed and instructions for the ice cream. To make it, they used Ziplock baggies filled with sugar, heavy cream/milk, and a splash of vanilla for a sweet taste. Then, they placed the bag into a gallon-sized bag filled with large ice cubes and rock salt. The rock salt is essential because it makes the temperature drop, speeding up the process for the ice cream to form.
The most important step of the whole process is shaking the bag. Depending on your choice of consistency, it may take anywhere from 10-25 minutes of vigorous shaking to form the mixture into the perfect thickness. After pouring the ice cream back into the cups, there were choices to top it with Peanut Butter M&Ms, regular M&Ms, and of course, sprinkles.
While making ice cream is a fun way to earn service hours, there is no better time than the season of giving for the members to donate items to the Humane Society of Harford County. These donations will be in support of the cats, dogs, and other small animals and collected in Mrs. Garfinkel’s classroom through Wednesday, December 18th. Each donated item – up to four items – is an opportunity for the members to not only earn a half-hour of service, but also to help the local pet shelter in our community.
The Humane society has specific requirements for what our students can provide, including cat litter, dog toys, leashes, collars, beds, cleaning supplies, and more, which can be found on the website. If you choose to provide an item on the wish list via Amazon or another online website, print out a copy of that confirmation and turn it in to be accounted for. Additionally, Mrs. Cummings adds that “your generosity and contributions will make a meaningful impact on our community.”
