While all our stores are being taken over by the Wicked craze, Fallston’s very own drama company has gotten in on this trend. On opening day, November 22nd, the drama company made their way to the AMC theater in White Marsh to see the record-breaking film.
It is rare when a play-adapted movie gets so extremely hyped. In fact, Wicked is the fourth highest grossing film based on a Broadway musical according to global box office data, only behind Grease, Les Miserables, and Mamma Mia despite only being out for two weeks.
For the drama company, this is not something they wanted to miss, as they took up “quite literally every seat,” FHS Senior, Hezzy Strunkstein said. Strunkstein was “too indulged in the film” to sing along. However, this didn’t stop Hezzy from enjoying the music. “What is this feeling?” was her favorite because “it was such a good song, and the choreography was fun and well done.”
This movie was hyped up for a plethora of reasons, from the musical theater fans who were itching to see a movie adaptation of their favorite musical, to the Ariana Grande fans watching solely to see the star. And Grande’s performance as Glinda didn’t disappoint. Hezzy was particularly enchanted by the fact “they were able to focus so much on [Glinda’s] emotions and facial expressions that it made [Hezzy] have a deep connection to [Glinda]. In plays, you can’t get that same experience.”
Despite the amazing film being the focal point of this fieldtrip, Sophomore Ryan Karpewicz’s favorite part of this trip was “getting there and everyone talking inside the theater.”
The drama company is truly such an exceptional group of individuals. They continue to be welcoming to everyone at FHS and bond over their love for theatrical art. We truly can’t think of a Fallston group more deserving of an amazing trip like this. Special thanks to all the teachers who chaperoned and organized this field trip, especially Mrs. Partin!
