Last Wednesday, December 4th, German Club held its monthly meeting, celebrating Sanktnikolaustag, or Saint Nicholas Day. “Kids in Germany put shoes out for St. Nikolaus to fill them with treats on the 6th of December,” explains German teacher, Frau Montero. Saint Nicholas comes around and fills them with goodies like candies, coins, riddles, and other treats. Kids wake up the next morning overjoyed to see what Nicholas has brought them, similar to Christmas morning here in the States.
German students and club members gathered in Frau Montero’s room after school to make Nikolausstiefel (paper boots) and Lebkuchenherzen (gingerbread hearts). Students cut the templates from paper, colored and decorated them, and then showed them off. The boots were filled with different treats provided by Frau Montero, and members enjoyed them as they socialized. At the end of the meeting Lebkuchen and boots were hung on the wall as Christmas décor for the German room.
German Club meets on the first Wednesday of each month to celebrate a tradition from Germany’s culture. For more information, listen to the announcements close to the end of the month or visit Frau Montero in the language cluster.
