Fellowship of Christian Athletes has had early morning meetings for many years at Fallston High School. If you were to stumble into Mrs. Canatella’s room during one of these meetings, you would find a huge crowd of people. However, this year they have extended their meetings outside of school to Bible studies held in the evening, so students can attend for more than 20 minutes on Wednesday mornings.
The 2024 leaders decided they wanted FCA to be more than donuts and devotionals in the morning. “There’s only so much we can talk about at our weekly FCA meetings before school because of our tight time frame,” says senior and leader, Luca Cangelosi. “The FCA Bible studies allow us more time to break into small groups, have conversations with one another, enjoy fun snacks, and most importantly take a deeper dive into our faith.”
Luca inspired these meetings, and they have been a great success! 25-30 members have attended the two studies they have had so far. “The Bible studies have had an immense impact on the club and leaders. [They have given] our weekly FCA attendees as well as our leaders something else to attend to help take that next step in their faith,” Luca said.
Working together, the leaders – Chris Winterstein, Jesse Finley, Grace Donovan, Eryk Bender, Josh Atha, Luca Cangelosi, Mac Fisher, Noah Hunsinger, Olivia Rotella, and Ashley Myers – scheduled the first Bible study outside of school, which happened on November 8th. Putting these meetings together was a lot of work and responsibility for the leaders. They had to find space available, get food and drinks, find fun games, advertise the meeting, and make the lesson itself, all in the free time of their busy lives. However, it taught them to value certain skills like time management, communication, organization, adaptability, and leadership.
Sophomore Kaitlyn Kasten says, “I really like the community. I think it’s really fun and [the] conversations are just really great and deep, and I learn something new every time I come!”
The club hopes to see more growth as a result of these Bible studies and for people to find a loving, welcoming environment that “allows [people] to come together on a larger scale that’s not just the Fallston community, but a Christian community,” Luca said.
