On January 1, 2025, in the early morning hours of New Year’s Day, those still out celebrating the occasion on New Orleans’ Bourbon Street came under attack. The male suspect drove straight into the crowded street, exited the vehicle, and then proceeded to fire into the crowd, until he was fatally shot. The attack resulted in 15 deaths, including the suspect, and 35 injuries. Investigators are looking into this attack as an act of terrorism.
New Orleans, Louisiana, is a popular spot for fun festivities and celebrations. On the morning of January 1, many were still gathering ds Bourbon Street is famous for its vibrant atmosphere. People from all over flock there to enjoy the excitement of the city and especially the street.
The assailant, Shamsud-Din Jabbar, was an American-born resident of Houston, Texas. After the attack, the truck Jabbar drove into the crowd was found with an Islamic state flag. The FBI concluded that the attack is being considered “domestic terrorism,” since the assailant had no ties with foreign countries directly. Jabbar did, however, post videos of him pledging to the flag on social media before the attack.
Officials are still investigating but insist that the city is now safe from any danger. The injured are still recovering in the hospital, and the victims will be mourned across the nation, as well as by their loved ones.
