If you’ve been up to date on our recent articles, you’ve seen that FHS students have had a plethora of different opportunities to expand their interests beyond the classroom and into real-world situations. In Mrs. King’s Women in Perspective class, students were able to pick a woman in history and put together a lesson to share with kids at Fallston Middle School for Women’s History Month. Each group took over a different 6th grade Social Studies class, and when they weren’t teaching, they were able to walk around the nostalgic halls and talk to old teachers.
The week before was all preparation for their 45-minute lesson with the 6th graders. The goal was to not only to teach the students, but to keep them engaged in the lesson. As someone who wants to pursue a career as an elementary school teacher, I (Ashley) really enjoyed this experience. It was fun to get creative planning a lesson from simply making the eye-appealing PowerPoint to thinking of activities for kids to do.
Our lesson went exceptionally well. We had the kids play charades and draw biography covers for our woman, Josephine Baker. Despite being a little stressful to plan, the lesson was so much fun for us and most importantly, the kids! Other lessons also went well. Lyla Ethington, an FHS junior, learned teaching is “actually a lot harder than you think to keep children under control.” Despite this, she and many others had an amazing time.
The students were excited to learn from high schoolers too. Sixth grader Evelyn Price “would really like for the high school students to come down to the middle school [again] because they make learning fun.” Thankfully, the Women in Perspective teacher, Mrs. King, plans to continue this tradition for years to come. So, if you want opportunities such as this one, be sure to take Women in Perspective next year!
With any extra time, the FHS students told FMS students about high school. We talked about extracurricular activities and different electives offered. All the 6th graders seemed to be very excited about high school.
It was very nostalgic for students to be back at the middle school and wander the halls before it was their time to teach. Madison Tran’s favorite part of the whole trip was “reminiscing” and seeing where she used to be, right where those kids were sitting.
Overall, it is quite the understatement to say that this was a very fun experience for high schoolers in Mrs. King’s Women in Perspective class. The easy access to the middle school also made the trip much more manageable as it was just a simple walk down the hill to our neighbors. Be sure to take this class next year if you’re interested in experiences such as these!
