The annual Met Gala took place on Monday, May 5th, as many celebrities travelled to New York City and took to the carpet. The theme for this year was Superfine: Tailoring Black Style, and the carpet was filled with A-listers wearing very refined, structured suits, blazers, and gowns. Some looked fantastic, getting the theme just right while also putting their own twist, but others… missed the mark.
Best: Kylie Jenner

Kylie looked fantastic in her custom Ferragamo gown. It fit her perfectly; from the boned corset of the torso to the halter neckline, it hugged her body incredibly. The tailoring was also impeccable, which makes it in line with this year’s theme. I also really like the small details of beads throughout the bodice and skirt. It gave a little more dimension to the look.
Worst: Halle Berry

I’m sorry, but what is this? To be honest, I actually would like the look if she had added some sort of undergarment to it, but to me, this looks trashy and really just takes away and distracts from the garment’s integrity. I also really don’t like the fascinator they added on her head. Not my favorite to say the least.
Best: Rihanna

Obviously, Rihanna always looks incredible, but this look is one of my favorites she’s ever worn to The Met Gala. I think the proportions are just working very well here. Her baby bump juxtaposed by the coat sleeves tied around her back balances out very nicely, and I think the oversized hat is the cherry on top for this incredible look. Well done, Rihanna and Marc Jacobs!
Worst: Natasha Lyonne

Returning to The Met for the first time since 2019, you’d think she’d want to make a splash. However, I feel this look was more of a belly flop. I actually don’t mind the dress itself. It’s a sheer Alexander McQueen, paired with magenta heels that have a sort of elf-shape toe box to them. This dress just does not go with the theme at all. Personally, when I think about tailoring, I think structure and a complement to the adorner’s body. This dress is the complete opposite. It’s flowy, breathable, and I think it swallows her, just not being flattering overall.
Best: Gigi Hadid

I know Blake Lively is more commonly known as “The Queen of the Met,” but I think Gigi Hadid might be overthrowing her. Not only does the dress fit her amazingly, but I also like that she went for the gold instead of the classic neutrals that most other celebrities wore. The custom Miu Miu gown is absolutely gorgeous. Her look is pulling from a 1940s, jazz-like aesthetic in my opinion, and I think that is a really interesting and different way to adapt the theme.
Worst: Hailey Bieber

I know Hailey typically dresses very sophisticated and classic, but this is just plain boring. She heard the word “tailor” and just figured throwing on a blazer would cut it. The only saving grace for this look in my opinion is the necklace. It’s very eye-catching and adds some interest to this otherwise mundane outfit. I’d expected more from her.
Best: Janelle Monae

I think this look is super fun and unique. I also liked that she had a reveal under the original look to showcase the tailoring skills of Thom Browne. Opting for a skirt rather than a pair of pants for her suit was the better choice, as it offsets her from what everyone else was wearing. Plus, the clock monocle that hung from the bowler hat was a great detail they added.
Worst: Tracee Ellis Ross

I am sick and tired of all the bows, especially oversized ones. Not to mention, this look doesn’t even follow the theme. The tailoring is good, but the choice of a fully satin look is not good to showcase it; and the color palette stands out, but in my personal opinion, it’s not in a good way. I’m disappointed in Marc Jacobs for this one, especially since Rihanna looked so incredible.
