Since the first day of school, more than 97% of Fallston High students, on average, are showing up every day. That’s an amazing attendance record so far!
During the second week of school, the “Why I Show Up” campaign was launched for students to share their reasons and motivations to show up to school. Whether the reason was hanging out with friends, preparing for the future, challenging themselves, or even just getting to eat orange chicken for lunch, each one matters.
This campaign aims to help students think about why they come to school and remind everyone that showing up matters. It’s not just about attendance; it’s about having goals, being with friends, learning new things, and being part of something. By writing down our reasons, we can see how everyone has their own story, and that every reason is important.
“I think it’s pretty nice that we have this,” explains Kendra Lester, a sophomore. “It kind of gives me time to think about why I show up other than because I have to.” Some students, like Kendra, discovered new motivations they hadn’t considered before, while others feel more connected knowing their reasons are shared by their classmates.
During homeroom, students get a circle to fill out with their reasons for showing up. Students were asked to think beyond the cliche excuse – “because my parents make me” – and had to think about reasons that really matter to them. It was a chance to be real and think about what keeps us coming back every day.
Some people wrote about their dreams, others talked about their friends, and a bunch of us shared how school helps us improve in different areas of our lives. Jaiden Gibson, a senior, says, “I show up for my friends and just to enjoy my last year of high school.”
It’s cool to see how different everyone’s reasons are, but also how we’re all here for something that matters to us.
