With My Life with the Walter Boys’ first season being already controversial enough, the second season had a lot to prove, even before release. Many fans “hate-watched” the show due to it being “cringe” or even having “bad acting.” However, even with such strong critiques and criticisms, the show did very well on Netflix and was renewed for both a second and third season.
Despite the “bad acting” last season, I was still in love with the story lines. Season one had a good and classic teenage romance feeling that drew you in. I think season two’s fatal flaw was trying to mimic this feeling too closely. If they had just continued with where they left off, all would be well. This season felt more like a retelling of the same events of season one, which is my biggest critique. I wish there were more plot explorations, new love interests, and new twists.
Even with this critique, I still think that this season thrived in some areas. Specifically, there was a lot of character growth in which I was fond of. We got to see Jackie truly tackling her grief more than ever, and we got to see a new involved side of Cole.
When it comes to Cole and Jackie, which is the fan-favorite couple, I was really surprised and disappointed with how they handled their relationship. Fans are invested with these characters, but it seems like more screen time was given to the least-favored couples.
Overall, I think that this season is just okay. On a scale of 1-10, I would give it a 6, making it something I would only recommend if you are looking for a silly teen romance to give your time to. If you liked the love triangle aspects of other teenage romance shows, like The Summer I Turned Pretty, then I would recommend giving season two of My Life with the Walter Boys a try.
