Spanish Club’s first meeting of the year happened this past Wednesday, and it was a great way to expose students to the club. Spanish Club officers went all out for this meeting, hosting quesadilla making, Spanish trivia, marigold crafts, and finishing it off with eating homemade empanadas.
Arianna Hernandez, Vice President of Spanish club and Spanish NHS, ran the marigold-making station. She was “excited to see all the creations” that attendees made with a variety of tissue paper colors and even made her own traditional marigold, with yellow tissue paper. “The marigold is used a lot during Day of the Dead as a sort of trail leading up to the ofrenda,” says Arianna. The ofrenda, as mentioned previously, is an altar built to honor lost loved ones and celebrate their lives. It is often decorated with marigolds, candles, and framed photos. “It means a lot in Mexican culture,” explained Arianna.
The President, Angelina Velez, and Secretary, Chloe Mullineaux, ran the quesadilla-making station. Groups were able to make their very own quesadillas in the food prep kitchen, thanks to Ms. Richie and Ms. Mason allowing Spanish club to infiltrate their space for the meeting.
The empanadas were also prepared in the food prep ovens. Each attendee was given an empanada, which are baked or fried turnovers, typically with a protein filling. They were made by one of Fallston’s beloved custodians, Ms. Val. She made the empanadas from scratch and delivered them to the Spanish club for them to bake fresh. Chloe Mullineaux adds how grateful the officers were when Ms. Val agreed to make them.
The last station at the meeting was trivia, run by Claire Musser, Spanish Club’s Historian. The trivia was held in Mrs. McLeod’s classroom, where attendees were able to win candy for getting questions correct. The candy was a great incentive to answer various questions, and the members seemed very happy to have a little treat to follow up their empanadas and quesadillas.
Even if you don’t take Spanish, anyone is welcome to come to Spanish club, as long as you RSVP if necessary. Meetings are usually on Wednesdays, and will occur about once a month, but to keep up to date, join the Spanish Club Remind, using the code, @fhsspain23.
