Kicking off awards season, the Golden Globes were held Sunday night to honor outstanding achievement in movies and television released around the world in 2023. Celebrities walked the red carpet in designer suits and dresses to celebrate themselves and their peers for another magnificent year in Hollywood.
There are several awards given throughout the night including best motion picture, best television series, best screenplay, best performance by an actor in a motion picture, best performance by an actress in a television series, and other varieties of these categories that differ due to the gender of the awardee and if the media is a drama or a musical/comedy.
Oppenheimer was a big winner, with Christopher Nolan winning best director of a motion picture, best drama motion picture overall, Ludwig Göransson winning best score, and Cillian Murphy winning best performance by an actor in a drama motion picture, but I think some may have been disappointed when Ryan Gosling was not awarded for his portrayal of Ken in Barbie. Robert Downey Jr. won title of best actor playing a supporting role in a motion picture as Lewis Strauss rather than the blonde Barbie lover. Though both are incredible actors, RDJ came out on top in this Barbenheimer battle.
Don’t be mistaken though; Barbie, the movie that took the world by storm over the summer, did not leave empty handed. Billie Eilish and Finneas O’Connell were awarded best original song for “What Was I Made For?” and the cinematic and box office achievement award was handed to Margot Robbie and Greta Gerwig. The latter is more than justified as Barbie is recorded at the highest grossing movie directed by a woman in history, garnering $1.442 billion worldwide.
The Golden Globes aren’t only to award talent in movies, but television as well. The Bear, a super popular Hulu show about a chef stripped from a fine-dining life and forced into running his family’s Chicago-based sandwich shop, took home quite a few trophies. Shameless alum, Jeremy Allen White, won best performance by an actor in a musical or comedy television series for his role as Carmen “Carmey” Berzatto. He was met by a standing ovation from the audience, as many viewers felt incredibly moved by his portrayal. Other awards The Bear received were best television series, and Ayo Edebiri secured best performance by an actress in a musical or comedy series for her role as Sydney Adamu.
If your favorite show or movie of 2023 wasn’t included as one of the winners of this ceremony, there are many more to come as award season begins. Look out for the Oscars, Emmys, Tonys, Grammys, Guilds, and many more shows in the coming months to potentially see some of your favorite celebrities and their works win big.
