Fallston’s Spanish Club is honoring The Day of the Dead for the next week. President, Angelina Velez; Vice President, Arianna Hernandez; Secretary, Chloe Mullineaux; and Historian Claire Musser have put together an ofrenda to honor the holiday in the main hallway.
The Day of the Dead, or Día de los Muertos, is a celebration and honoring of ancestors that have passed that is most commonly celebrated in Mexico. “It is a time to remember the lives [the ancestors] led, careers they held, and their favorite hobbies and foods,” Angelina says. “It is a time for the celebration of life and remembering.”
The ofrenda is decorated with photos of friends and family, candles, skull decorations, and one of the important symbols, marigolds. “The marigolds hold a really special part of the ofrenda. Typically, the flower petals are a path for their loved ones to find the alter,” says Arianna. At the most recent Spanish Club meeting, Arianna led members through creating marigolds using tissue paper which are now being used to decorate the ofrenda.
Arianna says she is “so glad we got so much support to make the ofrenda and [she’s] so proud of how it turned out.” Visit the ofrenda any time this week or next to see the hard work of the Spanish Club officers!
