This past Saturday, April 5th, there were protests taking place all across the country, fighting against the current state of our government. One of these protests took place in downtown Bel Air, with many holding signs that condemned Donald Trump, Elon Musk, lack of abortion rights, recently placed tariffs, changes in social security, and many other controversial topics that our current president has imposed. Citizens were lined up and down sidewalks, chanting and holding signs, while many passers-by cheered along with them.

The Harford County Democratic Council and Together We Will (local groups that empower community members to participate in our democracy) joined forces to coordinate and facilitate the rally. Protestor Maggie Sadiq says, “I hope to let the local community know that things are not okay.” The protestors came together to display their like-minded beliefs. Luca Jovedi, another local protestor, says he wants for “closed-minded people to start questioning” the state of our political system.
Protests like this one have occurred all across Maryland. They’re called “Hands Off!” rallies, and at least one was planned in each state. To get others involved, some protestors dressed up in costumes including Mickey Mouse and Abraham Lincoln.
This demonstration of democracy wouldn’t be possible without the organizations, volunteers, and hundreds of protestors that showed up. Joanne Webster, a volunteer for the Harford County Democratic Council says the organization wishes to “continue to fight for social justice for everyone.” For more information on future protests and events, visit https://harforddemocrats.org/
