I am tired of the same streaming service rhetoric that I hear every time a new movie gets released.
“Want to go see the new movie that just came out?”
“No, I’m just gonna wait till it’s on Netflix.”
It is the same conversation every time, since no one wants to go enjoy a good movie on the big screen anymore.
I remember when I was little, how movie theaters were everything to me. I was even invested in the trailers, so much so I would turn to my dad after each one and say “oh, we are so going to see that!” Cuddled up in the fancy brand-new recliners, eating overly buttered popcorn and candy snuck over from the 5-Below next door, and slurping on a mouth-staining bright red cherry slushy, I sat back and watched true cinema. Everything was a five-star movie to me, whether I was seeing the new Avengers movie or Captain Underpants.
Since no one seems to want this experience anymore, here is a guide to a perfect day at the movie theater:
-
- Plan. Nobody wants to be sitting next to randoms or have to break your neck sitting in the front row, so you have to get your tickets earlier in the day for a valuable experience. Since the box office is not really a thing anymore, that is one nostalgic experience you will have to do without and resort to online buying.
- When choosing seats, always choose the back in the middle! This is the best view in the theater, and it definitely beats the view from your TV at home.
- Arrive right on time. Do not get there too early and sit through the annoying ads but get there at your ticket time. This way, you get to see the trailers of all the new movies coming out and plan for your next movie day. For example, I went to see Back to the Future for an anniversary screening and saw the trailer for Song Sung Blues, a movie I never heard of but now cannot wait to see.
- Get a large popcorn, to share, of course! I guess now that we are older, we can skip on the snuck-in candy and resort to classic popcorn. After you get yours, make sure to add butter!
- Get your drink of choice; my personal preference is a water bottle, but I know that is not a popular first pick.
- Sit back, relax, and enjoy the film!
- Make sure to check if the movie you are seeing has a post-credits scene. Popularized by the Marvel Cinematic Universe, end-credit extra scenes are quite common now, and something you do not want to miss!
I hope after this picture-perfect movie theater day you can see that streaming services are no match to the authentic and nostalgic movie theater outings. Grab your friends and see a true movie!
