The Met Gala, also known as the biggest night in fashion or the first Monday in May, was held in New York City’s Metropolitan Museum of Art on May 6th. Notorious for its iconic themes each year, celebrities showed up adorned in couture fitting “Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion.”

I’m going to break down my favorites and least favorites of the night. Now, you may be thinking, “Kasey, why should we care what you think?” Well, I have multiple attributes that make my opinion basically fact. 1. Sleeping Beauty was my favorite princess when I was little, so I’ve seen the movie many times. 2. I have lots of random and useless knowledge about celebrities and designer brands. And 3. You clicked on this article so obviously you’re curious about how my brain works.

I make my decisions mainly based on if it fits the theme, if it’s interesting to look at and not the same as what everyone is wearing, and if I just like it.

I like this a lot. It fits her super well, it’s an archive piece, and it’s different from just the flowers everyone has been wearing. She went the Maleficent route instead of the Aurora route which I appreciate.

Bad: Michelle Yeoh

I’m sorry…but this looks like aluminum foil. She looks like she wrapped a roll of Reynolds Wrap around herself and walked out the door. Very reflective.

Good: Lana Del Rey

I love this. She’s like a nature forest fairy. It’s very ethereal and fits the theme well. Lana gets a stamp of approval from me.

Bad: Zoe Saldana

This is way way way too casual for the Met Gala. The riding boots dress it down a ton and the belt just feels like an advertisement for the brand.

I really like this one too. The dark brown color and the detailing gives it a tree root or vine look, on theme considering the palace was covered in vines once Sleeping Beauty fell asleep in the movie. It also fits really well, and the color is good on her skin tone and with her hair.

Bad: Rita Ora

I HATE this. It is just plain bad. The fit is odd, and the silhouette does nothing for her body shape. Also, the fake-naked look needs to be done tastefully and in a sophisticated way, and this isn’t that.

Good: Tyla

I really like this. The hourglass is a really cool concept and the sand on her shoulder is a nice touch. The train also looks so cool, like the running of the sand in an actual hourglass. Plus, her purse is a nice touch.

The fit on this is AWFUL. The hemming on the bottom structured part isn’t right at all and the fabric the dress is made out of makes the dress look cheap and costumey. The hourglass inspiration was done much better on Tyla. This just is not a good look on her.

Princess Aurora herself in the new Maleficent movies really met the expectations I had set for her. This color is so good on her, and the wet look is one that’s done often at the Met, but I don’t think ever gets old.

Bad: Sarah Paulson

I know bows are super in right now, but this is just overkill. She looks like she wants to fit in with the younger generations trends but is trying too hard. Plus, bows are bound to be out soon enough considering how fast the trend cycle moves. It’s a no from me.
