Fall is here and there is no better time than now to curl up on the couch with a warm drink to watch a movie. I’ve curated a list of movies that I deem the best to watch at this time of year.
The first movie on my list is the 1993 classic, Hocus Pocus, starring Sarah Jessica Parker, Bette Midler, and Kathy Najimy. Hocus Pocus is a film about a coven of witches who run amuck around a small town while two siblings try and prevent them from becoming immortal. Hocus Pocus is a great fall movie because it’s got a spooky Halloween vibe mixed with comedy, making it fun and entertaining for everyone.
Second, on the list of recommendations is another witchy movie, Practical Magic. This film stars two of the biggest names in Hollywood to this day, Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman. Practical Magic follows two witch sisters who face a family curse that dooms the men they love; the sisters must use their powers to break the curse. Practical Magic is a quintessential fall movie because it blends the cozy, mystical vibes of the season with themes of sisterhood and overcoming adversity.
Next is one of my favorite movies ever, The Dead Poets Society. The ‘80s classic follows a group of private school boys who are inspired by their unconventional English teacher to seize the day, “carpe diem”. The Dead Poets Society is one of the best autumn movies because it captures the reflective mood of the season and is a bit melancholic, which is perfect for crisp fall evenings.
There wouldn’t be a list without a Tim Burton movie, and the one I picked is Beetlejuice. This comedy is about a recently deceased couple who become ghosts, they haunt their former home and when a new family moves into their house, they enlist the help of Beetlejuice to scare them away. Beetlejuice is a great fall movie because it’s got a harmonious blend of spooky and funny, with its quirky, gothic aesthetic and themes of the supernatural.
Completing the list is one of the best romantic comedies, When Harry Met Sally. This film follows Harry and Sally as they navigate their friendship and evolving feelings for each other over several years. When Harry Met Sally makes a great fall movie because it’s a cozy, romantic comedy with scenes set against the backdrop of a beautiful New York autumn.
In conclusion, these are the five films that are at the top of my recommendation list. If you decide to watch these movies, you will find that they will give you a cozy and content feeling that comes with the season. So, make a warm drink, cozy up with family or friends, and let the magic of these movies transport you to a happy place this autumn.
