On November 13th, the Spanish Club hosted its annual Día de los Muertos meeting, drawing in more than 40 students eager to learn and celebrate. The meeting was filled with crafts, snacks, and activities that show the traditions of this important Mexican holiday.
The meeting began with an introduction to Día de los Muertos, which takes place on November 1st and 2nd. Rather than being a sad gloomy occasion, the holiday is a joyful celebration of life, honoring and remembering loved ones who have passed away. Students learned about the cultural significance of altars, marigolds, and sugar skulls, all of which play a role in the festivities across Mexico.
After the presentation, members jumped into hands-on activities. One of the highlights was a Día de los Muertos-themed Kahoot game, where students tested their knowledge of the holiday traditions and history. Crafting was another popular part of the meeting. Students created papel picado, which are colorful banners made from tissue paper cut into intricate designs. These decorations came with multiple different colors like bright reds, yellows, and blues. Members also decorated skulls with markers and colored pencils.
Snacks were provided throughout the meeting, letting students have a chance to relax and enjoy the atmosphere. Members snacked on chips and cookies and sipped on drinks as they laughed and spent time with friends.
