For many years, the National Honor Society has hosted a rose sale the week before Valentines Day where students are able to purchase several roses to send to anyone they want to in the school. This year, the Cougars decided to switch it up a bit and replace the roses with carnations because they were “cheaper and last way longer than roses,” said Mrs. Price. The carnation sale, with prices ranging from $3 for one to $30 for a dozen, was also extended beyond Valentine’s Day due to snow days that delayed the sale.
Flowers were carefully wrapped and distributed by NHS members on February 20, 2024, to each recipient with notes written from the senders. Students received flowers with various colors such as white, purple, yellow, and red.
“I like the new carnations more than the roses,” said Avery Mendoza, who received four flowers. “I don’t think I would have gotten so many colorful flowers like these if they were roses.”
After being distributed, leftover carnations were sold in the main hallway at the end of the school day to students for only one dollar, which attracted a good amount of attention and allowed more students to participate in the event and enjoy the beautiful flowers. Overall, the carnation sale was a success and brought smiles to many people in the school even after the Valentine’s season. The efforts of the NHS members and faculty ensured the event ran smoothly despite weather challenges, and the funds raised will support various NHS initiatives and future projects.
