On Thursday, December 4, 2025, Baltimore’s Washington Monument in Mount Vernon Place lit up the night sky as thousands of people gathered for the city’s 54th annual Monument Lighting, like Hoos on Christmas. The event has become one of Baltimore’s most beloved traditions and is often called the official start of the holiday season. The Washington Monument, which honors George Washington, was decorated with 12,800 bulbs. When the lights switched on at 7:30 p.m., fireworks exploded above the crowd.
The celebration wasn’t just about the lights. Local schools and community groups filled the night with music. The Baltimore School for the Arts jazz band and vocalists performed holiday favorites, while the Peabody Brass Ensemble and BSO OrchKids Brass Band added some pretty nice tunes. The Morgan State University Choir and the Emmanuel Choir sang powerful songs, and special guest Allison Bailey, a Broadway performer from Wicked, ‘wowed’ the crowd with her voice.
Before the lighting, visitors enjoyed food and drinks from around 20 local vendors. Hot chocolate, desserts, and snacks kept everyone warm. Many families said they come every year for both the treats and the tradition. One student in the crowd shared, “It’s time to set the lights on!”
The Monument Lighting is more than just a fun night. It brings people together from all over the city and reminds everyone of Baltimore’s history and culture. The event also helps local businesses and shows off the Mount Vernon neighborhood, one of the city’s most historic areas.
Baltimore celebrated its 54th Monument Lighting; the tradition proved once again that it’s here to stay. For students, families, and visitors, December 4 was a night to remember, a mix of lights, music, food, and community.
The Washington Monument will stay lit throughout the holiday season, shining up to the sky, almost like a symbol of Baltimore’s joy and togetherness. Its glow provides as a reminder of community spirit, lighting not only Mount Vernon Place but also the further to come for Baltimore.
