As many students, especially those who are in the National Honors Society, work to complete their required service hours, many are looking for opportunities that are reliable, meaningful, and closer to home. Fortunately, several local organizations make it easy for students to get involved while giving back to the community.
Habitat for Humanity
Are you someone who wants to get into construction, or maybe you’re just someone wanting to learn a new skill? One popular option is volunteering with Habitat for Humanity, which provides students with hands-on service opportunities. This organization is truly special, as volunteers may help with projects, like assisting in building affordable housing. These experiences allow students to directly support families in need while learning the value of teamwork and community involvement. Habitat for Humanity Susquehanna is located right in Bel Air, and they are looking for their next construction crew to make a difference!

This place is known for a flexible schedule, and it’s a great fit for students looking for weekend or after-school hours.

Don’t forget that Fallston High is also here to help. Students can sign up for the Service Club at Fallston for additional service opportunities. If you are interested, stop by Mr. Jergensen’s room, as he is the club’s advisor.
In addition to the Service Club, Fallston also offers the Green School Club, advised by Mrs. C. Cummings, which provides service opportunities throughout the year. Students should also keep an eye on their email for messages from Mrs. Price and Mrs. Majewski, who regularly share information about upcoming service activities. Mrs. Price will also have sign-up sheets available on the window of her classroom, so be sure to check often.
With so many local opportunities available, earning NHS service hours does not have to be stressful. Whether students prefer hands-on work, helping people, caring for animals, or supporting their local school community, some options fit a wide range of interests.
