Students in FHS’s Leadership class recently had the opportunity to visit the Maryland State House in Annapolis, where they were able to observe the legislative process firsthand and gain insight into the realities of political leadership.
For senior Olivia Parker, the first thing that stood out was the historic beauty of the building itself. “Every room had an important part of history,” Parker said, referencing significant moments such as George Washington’s resignation. However, what left the biggest impression on her wasn’t just the architecture; it was the people.
Parker was surprised to learn that many of the individuals working at the State House do not serve there as a full-time job. “For most of them, it’s kind of a side gig,” she explained. Students met delegates, farmers, lawyers, realtors, and teachers, all of whom participate in lawmaking simply because they are passionate about politics.
During the visit, students observed legislators proposing bills and presenting arguments for why those bills should become law. Parker noted how prepared the presenters were. “I didn’t realize how much went behind everything,” she said. “The people presenting were ready for every question they were asked.”
Seeing legislators in action had a lasting impact on Parker’s perspective. “It made me realize how much more I need to pay attention to politics,” she said, adding that the experience deepened her understanding of how government functions beyond what is taught in a classroom.
The trip is closely connected to the goals of the Leadership class, which focuses on building résumés, searching for scholarships, and gaining real-world experience. Parker believes the visit will significantly expand her knowledge of politics and motivate her moving forward. “Seeing all of these people with their political values and views definitely makes a difference,” she said. “It makes me work harder.”
Overall, the visit to the Maryland State House gave students a meaningful look into leadership beyond school walls, reinforcing the importance of civic engagement and informed participation in government.
