Sports are often seen as competitive, but the Sports for Life program shows that athletics can be about inclusion, friendship, and having fun. Sports for Life is an HCPS program designed to give students with disabilities the opportunity to participate in sports alongside student volunteers.
The program takes place over three seasons: Students participate in cornhole in the fall, bowling in the winter, and basketball in the spring. These events allow students of all ability levels to stay active, meet new people, and experience being a part of a team.
“The main goal for Sports for Life is to provide teamwork, cooperation, foster inclusion, build community, and give all students, regardless of ability, a meaningful sports experience,” Mrs. Grant, Sports for Life coach, states. The program focuses less on competition and more on participation and building a supportive community.
The impact of Sports for Life goes beyond the athletes who participate. While volunteers may join thinking they are helping others, many end up learning just as much themselves. Students gain leadership skills, patience, and new friendships through diverse experiences.
There are still opportunities for students to get involved. A Sports for Life basketball tournament will take place in April, and coaches Mrs. Grant and Mrs. Disciorio are always looking for additional volunteers to participate and support the teams; students interested in joining can reach out to either coach for more information.
For students thinking of joining in the future, Sports for Life is a great way to play sports while meeting new people and being a part of something meaningful. Mrs. Grant states that athletes are always “having fun, celebrating one another, and showing such genuine excitement.” The program continues to show that sports can bring people together and make lasting memories for everyone.
