What to get for your dorm coming from former FHS print staff. Though they have graduated, they are still here to give us their amazing input to help you manage going from your home in Fallston to smaller living quarters.
Woozoo Fan
Addy Rebasti who is class of ‘24 and attends the University of Tennessee Knoxville says that a Woozoo fan is “essential for the southern heat.” The Woozoo fan is sold at any major superstore such as Walmart and Target but of course it can be found on Amazon.
Ottoman
In addition to the fan, Addy also recommends bringing an ottoman because most dorm beds are lifted. Unfortunately for Addy, her ottoman broke which was “quite annoying.” Needless to say, buy a sturdy ottoman and bonus points if you can use it for storage and seating.
Ice Maker
Last up on Addy’s list is an ice maker. Depending on the size of your dorm, having an icemaker would be a great addition for your room. Specifically, she adds that it’s important to have an ice maker “so you don’t need to waste a meal swipe on ice.”
Light Up Mirror
Our former Co-Editor-in-Chief, Kasey Conlon, now at Virginia Tech is a make-up guru and a full-on fashionista. Her tips are especially helpful if you’re a fashion lover like her. First, she says to bring a light up mirror for your desk because “dorm lighting is really bad, and you don’t have to turn the overhead light on while you get ready.”
Comfy Clothes
Kasey also says to bring “lots of comfy, cute basics.” In college, you’re not going to want to wake up even earlier than you need to pick out a nice outfit. She adds that “having nice sweat sets, leggings, and other comfy clothes to mix and match with is essential, especially in the winter.”
College Gear
If you end up attending a big football school such as Kasey, game day gear is very important. She says that “Finding vintage jerseys on eBay or buying stuff from your school’s shop are two good options.” And not to mention “college attire is a nice idea for grad gifts,” Kasey adds.
Desk Hutch
Ashley Myers, who served Co-Editor-in-Chief alongside Kasey, is now attending East Carolina University. One of her top dorm must-haves is a desk hutch. For those who might not know, a desk hutch is a vertical shelving unit that sits on top of a desk to maximize desk space. You could store your everyday items, picture frames, nick-nacks, etc.
Slippers
Slippers are also a good thing to bring with you as Ashley says, “you’ll need/want them more than you think you do.” Dorms have been used by countless students prior to you, so you never know what germs are on the floor. You could invest in fancy Uggs, or a $20 pair off Amazon will do the trick too.
Mattress Topper
Despite all the money you pay to live in college, the dorm beds aren’t great. Ashley also adds that it’s important to have a mattress topper to help get a full night’s sleep so you can ace all your classes.
At the end of the day, having a space where you feel safe, comfortable, and genuinely at home can set you up for a successful semester. No matter your style, make your dorm feels like yours – it makes all the difference.
