Teachers and upperclassmen “ace” epic student-teacher volleyball game

The game was originally scheduled for Friday, December 23. The epic student-teacher volleyball game, that is. However, it was postponed as Harford County Public Schools were treated to a snow day.  Consequently, the game was put off until Friday, January 20, and was then made into the SGA’s first ever winter pep rally.

Unfortunately, there was no overall winner, but instead one winner for each game. Coaches for each team were extremely confident; however, preparation efforts and enthusiasm ultimately showed. Every team played a good game, just some better than others.

In the last 20 seconds of the first game, the teachers were up 15-14 against the juniors with Mr. Grant up to serve. The history teacher let the clock run down until the last 5 seconds where he served a high ball that hit the ceiling, leaving the juniors with a buzzer-beater point that ended the game in a 15-15 tie.

Ms. Chatterton, a player on the teacher team, says that “Mrs. and Mr. Grant were [their] MVPs as they both had a lot of great serves in a row that helped [them] win the games that [they] did.”

Next, the freshmen were up. The first two minutes were engaging until the teacher team began crushing them. Ultimately, the game was ended a minute and a half early as the teachers were leading the students 25-8. Katherine King, a coach of the freshman team, explains how she was “feeling content because it was such a fun experience to be a part of,” despite the loss.

The sophomore team also had trouble keeping up with the teacher team and ultimately lost. Mr. Collins, the school principal, states how he felt the team was amazing. “An epic collection of intellectual and physical talent that gelled as the game progressed,” he calls his colleagues. However, the teacher team’s lucky streak only lasted for so long.

To end the pep rally, the seniors took to the court. The game was fairly tied until volleyball player Ellery Thompson went on a serving streak that the teachers couldn’t handle. With many points scored, the senior team quickly took the lead and kept it all the way up to the end. The senior team ended up being the only team that defeated the teacher team.  “The best part was the fact that no one got hurt – that’s a win for us old guys,” Mr. Hulka stated.

All in all, the upperclassmen proved they came to win while the underclassmen struggled along. The teacher team showed up as well, and though they played a good game, unfortunately could not beat the seniors.
